Many motorists consider their vehicle an object of worship and, therefore, do not hesitate for a second to seek the corresponding preventive maintenance. However, other users let time pass without paying attention to the wear and tear that the parts are experiencing and the dirt that accumulates in the assembly.
Taking care of the motorcycle must be a continuous task so that each system works correctly. One can put one’s own knowledge into practice in this task, although periodically, it is advisable to go to specialized workshops to keep the motorcycle in perfect condition.
It is important to remember that carrying out some checks on the motorcycle from time to time and taking out motorcycle insurance with the best coverage can extend its components’ useful life and increase safety while traveling.
What should be checked in motorcycle maintenance?
- Engine oil: should be checked at least once a month or every 6,000 kilometers. In summer, this preventive maintenance should be carried out more frequently because it is possible that it evaporates due to the heat.
- Tires: as we have already mentioned on other occasions, having good motorcycle insurance is as important as taking care of the wheels, since they play a fundamental role in the safety of a motorcycle, because they are the only point of contact with the asphalt. Therefore, it is advisable to examine the tires on a permanent basis, especially before taking a trip. In the latter case it is important to look at the pressure, if there is any deformation in the cover and the depth of the pattern, which cannot be less than 1.6 millimeters.
- Brakes: in addition to examining the entire brake assembly, the fluid should be changed every two years and checked every 6,000 kilometers or once every 12 months. Taking advantage of these deadlines, it is time to check the brake pads.
- Coolant fluid: it is very important to maintain the level of this fluid approximately every 1,000 kilometers. However, it is interesting to inspect its color once a month and whether it has suffered any sudden decrease.
- Oil filter : the best preventive maintenance of the oil filter is what the manufacturer indicates in terms of cleaning and replacements. Even so, it is advisable to put a new one every time you change the fluid or at most every 12,000 kilometers.
- Battery: It is mandatory to check the general condition of the battery and its charge level periodically, mainly when the motorcycle has not been running for a long period. Likewise, it must be replaced every four years.
- Chain: It is very important to have safe motorcycle chains. To keep them in optimal condition, they must be cleaned, greased, and tensioned. The second step must be carried out approximately every 300 kilometers and whenever a trip is made in the rain. Regarding tension, it is recommended to do it every 1,000 kilometers.
- General cleaning of the motorcycle : to contribute to good maintenance of the motorcycle , it should be cleaned once a week, also including the adjustment of the seats.
- Lights : To avoid reducing visibility when traveling at night, it is advisable to examine the headlights with some frequency and replace the bulbs every two years or after having traveled 50,000 kilometers.
- Transmission: The transmission chain must be lubricated and cleaned every two or three months and checked for tension after 500 kilometers.
